Alpine training

Just coming to the end of an amazing week of hot, dry weather and brilliant Alpine trails. I’ve been working on high end fitness and climbing which is hard work but the reward of singletrack descents make it all worthwhile. I’ve climbed over 5100m in 10hrs over the last four days!

Comparing to Dublin, my equivalent to a quick 3 rock spin is a 1200m climb and then back down on singletrack all the way – something like a combination of KDM, GC, and Benchcut on drugs! tighter, steeper switchback, bigger rocks, huge drops off the edge etc. Needless to say its a lot faster to come down than going up. It gets a bit hairy at times, I’ve ridden about 90% so far but have to clean it before I leave!

Today I went exploring in Switzerland, it was a bit hit and miss because I kept getting carried away going up hill and having to turn round because of snow, but I did find a few amazing trails and there’ll definitely be more in a week or so if this weather keeps up. I wish I had a camera, the mountains and views are amazing, really cool to be riding in shorts and t-shirt surrounded by snow. My biker tan lines are coming on nicely as well and its only April!

Looking forward to round 2 of the Racer Bikes Cup in Lugano next Saturday – there’s another list of top class competition entered and its good excuse to travel a bit and ride somewhere new.

Racer Bikes Cup – Schaan

After a long winter of training, cold hands and road biking, my race season has finally started. Its been so long that I was beginning to wonder if I even liked racing still! My preparation over the last month couldn’t have been worse with a knee injury preventing anything race specific, then to make matters worse I had a bit of an upset stomach last night and this morning. Still, I was determined to make the most of the opportunity to race the pros and give myself a benchmark for how I’m doing.

The gun went and it was straight into a 2km climb, all elbows out as we jostled for position. I got into a rhythm and was doing ok towards the back of the main group. The pace was fast but very steady all the way up, and with 20 degrees and the sun blaring down it was a relief to get to the top and hit the descent. After the first couple of laps there were a few of us jostling backwards and forwards so I really had to concentrate to stick with them.

By the 5th lap although I was having to fight cramp, i was actually feeling pretty strong. I dropped a couple of girls on the climb and caught up with a group of juniors. Until then I had made time on the descent each lap, but some of them were really quick – good though, made me push harder to keep up. Climbing the 6th lap i was having a real battle with 2 other girls, and starting to prepare for a tough race on the last (7th) lap. I was gutted to hear the motorbike coming up behind and see Elisabeth Osl coming by to lap me. After that I really gave it everything to get ahead of the group and avoid getting passed by anyone else, and managed to put a bit of time into them on the last descent.

Just seen the results (Swiss efficiency for you!), I was 21st, not too bad – a bit of googleing showed I beat some experienced riders too. Overall I’m pretty happy with my performance, I know with more preparation I can do better but at least now I have a benchmark. Most importantly it was great fun – role on the next one in 2 weeks!

Thanks to Laia for doing my bottles, couldn’t have managed without you! also my Erasmus supporters, and of course UCD, Met and Think Bike.

Back to Training

As of last Tuesday my knee seems to be back to normal so I’ve been getting stuck into training to try and get back to fitness as quickly as possible. Its such a relief and great to be back on the mountain bike -especially as its turned to summer with 20 degrees and sun for the last few days! After nearly a month of disruption I really need to work on high end fitness though, I’ve done hardly any race specific training.

Tomorrow I’ll be doing the Swiss Power race but treating it as a training session. I’ve ridden the course a few times now, it seems to get harder each time! the climb is so long and steep, and riding the descent at pace needs a lot of energy too so there is little chance to recover. Its very much about fitness and 8 laps will be a bit of a killer!

There are 43 Elite Females entered – the most I’ve ever raced against is 12! The atmosphere is great, 100s of bikes, huge vans from all the big bike brands and pro teams, loads of spectators etc. All very exciting but a bit scary at the same time!

Swiss Power Cup Preride

Today was a bit of a test for how my knee is doing, I decided to try riding some hills and see if it has any effect – all very slow and in the granny ring! Felt ok at the time but I’ll know for sure tomorrow I think so fingers crossed!

The main reason was that the Swiss Power Cup course for next weekend was open to pre-ride and I wanted to find out what its like. Its pretty cool, less than 10 mins off-road ride to get there from my house. Loads of very pro looking people zipping around too.

I’m not sure what to make of it. A very short lap with one big long climb and a long descent, starting and finishing on the edge of the town on steep fields. It was like Irish biking today, wet roots an mud with lots of drifting round corners, but things dry out very quickly here so it could change. It was ok, some nice parts to the descent and quite a bit of singletrack, but it lacked a bit of excitement I think. Maybe racing it would be different and apparently UCI ranked it as one of the top in the world so who am I to complain!

I got my fun buzz getting home down some nice technical singletrack through the woods that finishes almost at my door. Nice. The new bike is feeling great too, just got the tubeless tyres sorted and cant believe how different it feels!

Injuries

My damaged knee has been dragging on much longer than I’d hoped and still doesn’t seem to be 100% fixed, I’m registered to race next weekend but I’m really not sure it’ll happen. Training has been limited to the flat cycle paths along the Rhine Valley at a steady pace and reduced distance.

Its been a real lesson in why to avoid injuries in the future. For a start, its difficult to stay motivated when you can’t see much benefit to time spent cycling – I’ve really just been trying not to loose too much fitness but not actually progressing. Then getting passed by roadies all the time as I’m on the MTB with knobbly tyres, not to mention looking up to the mountains surrounding me and seeing new trails appearing everyday as the snow melts.  But actually the worst thing is the frustration of seeing all the time and hard work from training over the winter being lost at the only time it really matters.  I was really starting to feel strong and ready to start racing before all this. I know, its a long season and theres plenty of time to get it back but its still very annoying!

Disaster! (but could be worse)

I’ve just had THE most frustrating week ever.  2 weeks ago I took a day off to go skiing (more or less the only day i’ve skipped training all winter) and fell and hurt my knee.  It wasn’t too bad at the time so I didn’t think much of it, I was fairly cautious with training the next few days but it seemed fine.

Nearly a week later I went out doing some hard hill intervals and the next morning my knee was so sore I could barely turn the pedals.  So I took a week off and some ibuprofen thinking that would fix it.  That was a week and a half ago, and it seemed to be hardly getting better. I was beginning to think I’d torn a ligament and feeling like it’d never be better. Being in the Alps, surrounded by trails, sunny weather, and everyone else out doing fun activities while I was stuck at home resting was horrible!

So yesterday i went to the physio really expecting the worst – like 3 weeks, 2 months to recover. Turned out to be the best news possible under the circumstances.  I’ve damaged the ligaments, have some fluid and slight instability but it should be healed in a week with the help of anti-inflamatories. AND not only that, I can ride at 70% HR on the flat in the meantime! not ideal but enough to keep me sane.

A week would then give me 12 days until the first round of the Swiss Power Cup which I’m hoping to race. I won’t be as fit as I’d hoped, it’ll be the biggest, hardest training session ever, but fingers crossed I can take part! its taking place 5 minutes from my house, there are posters up everywhere and the world and olympic champions signed up for it!

So lesson learnt. No more skiing.

Liechtenstein – some first impressions

I’ve been enjoying life in the Alps for just over a week now, the first few days for fun and German lessons, and on Monday I started my architecture course.

I’ve been getting out biking quite a bit, but unfortunately haven’t had chance to go with anyone from here yet so I’ve been mostly been enjoying getting stuck into interval sessions and big alpine climbs on the road (climbed 7500m since arriving!). Its a bit surreal riding a bike up these alpine roads with a meter of snow either side of you and passing people on skis, sledges, snow shoes etc. Really hard to get the clothing right too – roasting going up if its sunny but icey cold coming back down – especially as I’m usually breaking all the speed limits to get home!

I’ve had a few attempts at trail finding but not managed to find anything hugely exciting yet – mostly either problems with snow or fairly tame non-technical singletrack. Hopefully will do better this week, need the practice as the first race of the year is approaching fast!

Starting college was a bit of a shock to the system, its pretty hardcore here – I was hoping for an easy life compared to UCD but no such luck. Fitting in training is not going to be easy at all, I can be flexible with time a couple of the days but for example Thursdays I’m in lectures from 8.30am until 9pm with only an hours break! And continual assessment with marks for attendance means skipping school is not an option. It’s been good though so far, interesting and all that.

Juha & Laura

Juha & Laura

There are been plenty of activities with new Erasmus friends – last Sunday I went skiing in Montafon, Austria which was great. Perfect blue sky and sun, fresh powder and great runs. Living in Leich is a bit crazy, you need a passport and 2 currencies with you all the time just in case you cross into Austria or Switzerland (both 10mins down the road!).

Nights out are a bit suspect, the place isn’t exactly a night time hotspot! Places close very early and busses are not that frequent – the student dorms seem the best bet for a good night!

End of Carnival

End of Carnival

We had a trip to Austria for the end of carnival celebrations – a big, incredibley precisely made bonfire, massive firework display and gluvine.

Its very hard to get used to the precise time keeping around here too – 7pm means 7pm and not a minute later! and yes, even for a party! I’m constantly late.

Liechtenstein

This is the view from my new bedroom window – not bad really!

I eventually managed to get here after the most last minute of last minute rushes – didnt start packing my bike into its box until 10am on Wednesday and the flight was at 12.30!

Carrying a bike box, a 15kg rucksack and a 6kg rucksack across airports and train stations was not at all fun – in fact it was horrible, the only solution is to stay here forever so I dont have to do it again! I’m still aching all over from it.

Went for a quick spin up past the king and queens castle this afternoon – the trails are covered in snow but the roads are clear.  Can’t wait to do some proper exploration over the weekend!

New Bike

After a lot of effort and negotiating from everyone involved it’s finally all come together and the other day I went to collect my new bike! I’ll be riding for UCD CC on a new Trek Elite 9.8 with Shimano XT, Bontrager finishing kit, and Fox forks. It was made possible by funding from UCD AUC and the kind support of ‘Think Bike’ shop in Rathmines. I can’t believe its mine, all that carbon! I’ll have to ride super quick this year to justify it.

I gave it a real test on Sunday riding the Wicklow Way up 3 Rock, Prince Willies, over Maulin, and back through Djouce with Oisin. What a spin! The trails were incredibly dry after all the snow, the sun was out, and it felt almost like summer at times. The bike felt so good, it wants to ride fast all the time, flying up technical climbs effortlessly and floating over everything going down. Really nice to have everything new and working perfectly too! I was tired by the end though, its been a hard week and by the time I’d ridden back to Drumcondra it was 77km, over 2000m climbing and 4 hours 45 minutes.

Preparing for Leitchenstein

I only just made it on the plane from Leeds to Dublin after 3 attempts to get through airport security – they don’t like bike tools and understandably weren’t too keen on letting me through with a Lumicycle nightlight battery (a water bottle filled with wires and electrical tape looks exactly like a bomb to the non-trained eye!).

Now I’m in Dublin traipsing from one side of the city to the other collecting and distributing things – how is all my stuff so spread out?! Bikes, bike box, races license, new club kit, architecture stuff etc, and then trying to catch up with everyone in a short space of time – busy busy! Getting excited though now.

The next test will be packing up 6 months worth of luggage and getting out to Dublin Airport with it all. No idea how that’s going to work.
